Close up of a bowl with homemade pita chips

Do you ever find yourself craving a crunchy, satisfying, and wholesome snack? Homemade pita chips are baked to crispy perfection. They're incredibly easy to make, require minimal ingredients, and can be customized with your favorite seasonings. Dip into your favorite hummus recipe. These are a staple in our Middle Eastern kitchen, and we bet it'll soon be in yours, too.

Crispy Pita Chips Ingredients

Here's what you'll need to make crispy pita chips at home:

  • Pita Bread. Look for the thicker pita pockets. See below for tips on choosing the right type.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Brush onto the pita triangles to help them become golden brown and crisp.
  • Spices. We love to use za'atar seasoning, and we have many variation ideas for you below.

Choosing the Right Pita Bread

  • Thicker Pita with a Pocket: This type of pita bread is ideal for making chips because it allows you to separate the layers, creating thinner and crispier chips.
  • Whole Wheat Pita: Choose whole wheat pita bread for a healthier option. It adds more fiber and a slightly nuttier flavor to the chips.
  • Pocketless Pita Bread: If you can only find pocketless pita bread, you can still make pita chips. Just be aware that the baking time may vary depending on the thickness and size of the bread. In this case, do not to separate the top and bottom layers of the pita bread as shown in the image below.

Seasoning Suggestions

Experiment with different seasonings to suit your taste. Growing up with bold Middle Eastern aromas, we love a bold flavor profile. Here are some ideas:

  • Classic Garlic and Herb: Mix garlic powder, oregano, and salt.
  • Lemon and Herb: Use thyme, lemon zest and salt
  • Mediterranean Flare: Season with sumac, oregano and salt
  • Italian Style: Sprinkle with Italian seasoning
  • Cinnamon Sugar: cinnamon and sugar.

How to Store Baked Pita Chips

  • Store your pita chips in an airtight container at room temperature. This will keep them crisp and prevent them from becoming stale.
  • Keep the container in a cool, dry place away from humidity. Moisture can make the chips lose their crispiness.
  • Homemade pita chips should stay fresh for up to a week. However, they are best enjoyed within a few days for optimal crispiness and flavor.
  • Pita chips can be frozen and stored in a freezer bag or air-tight container. Use within 1 month.
  • If your pita chips lose their crispiness, you can reheat them in the oven. Preheat the oven to 250ºF and bake the chips for a few minutes until they regain their crunch.

What do you Eat with Pita Chips?

Homemade baked pita chips are so much better than store-bought and can be eaten any way you like.

Serve your crispy pita chips alongside a Falafel Bowl, add them to a Fattoush Salad, make them part of a cheese board or mezze platter, or toss them into a vegetarian stew for added texture.

Baked pita chips are a great vehicle for dipping. Try them with:

  • Romesco
  • Tomatillo salsa
  • Vegan queso dip
  • Beet dip
  • Tahini sauce
  • Matbucha
  • Mango salsa
  • Corn salsa
