What is Golden Milk?
Also called turmeric milk or golden latte, it's a drink made from plant-based milk infused with turmeric and other spices for flavor and possible health benefits. You'll find that golden milk is reminiscent of chai tea. It is called golden milk because turmeric powder gives it a golden yellow color.
Ingredients for Golden Milk
You can either mix add enough spices to make two cups of all at once or you can mix up the spices and save them in a jar to use per cup as needed. We have instructions for both options in the recipe card. Some people even like to mix their golden milk into their coffee like creamer!
- Unsweetened Plant-Based Milk. Soy, cashew, almond milk, oat, or coconut will work. Pick the dairy-free milk of your choice. The type of milk you choose will dictate how much protein, fiber, calcium, sodium, and carbohydrates your drink contains.
- Ground Turmeric Powder. Make sure you use fragrant and fresh spices. Research suggests that turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties. The known health benefits of turmeric come from the Curcumin compound.
- Ground Cinnamon.
- Ground Ginger. You could also use fresh ginger.
- Black Pepper. A freshly ground pinch of black pepper may help with the absorption fo the curcuminoids in turmeric and is also believed to have antioxidant properties.
- Ground Cloves.
- Ground Cardamom.
- Sweetener. You can use maple syrup, agave, honey, date sugar, coconut sugar, or regular sugar or even stevia if you are concerned about your sugar intake.
How to Make Golden Milk
Making this creamy Ayurvedic drink recipe is super easy. Just whisk all the spices into the plant-based milk. Then, heat everything on low heat in a small saucepan and let it simmer for 5 minutes. You do not want to bring this drink to a boil. Sweeten the turmeric latte to taste using your favorite sweetener. Drink it while it is hot or let it cool a little for a warming and comforting drink. Perfect for a cool day.
Pro Tip: Do not use a microwave to heat your drink because it can remove all of the nutritional health benefits of the spices and the milk will not absorb all the spice flavor.
FAQ
What milk should I use for golden milk?
Any plant-based milk such as soy, almond, oat, cashew, etc, or even regular milk will work. I think nut milk adds really nice flavor. Some people use full-fat coconut milk, we find it a little heavy. Some people use their favorite plant-based milk and add a little coconut oil to add healthy fat. A little bit of fat may help the turmeric be absorbed more easily. If you want protein in our drink, use either soy or any protein-enhanced plant-based milk.
What is the best time to drink turmeric milk?
Drink your turmeric milk about one hour before bed if you are using it to help with sleep. For other purposes, you can drink it whenever you like. It may absorb better on an empty stomach about thirty minutes before a meal. Keep leftovers in the refrigerator and enjoy them later.
How long will my golden milk keep?
This depends on the type of milk you use. If you don't finish the cup right away, you can reheat it for as long as the plant-based milk is still good. If you put it in the refrigerator in an airtight container, you can whisk it up and reheat it for several days to a week.
What are the origins of golden milk?
This healing drink originated in India and is thought to help with inflammation, joint pain, and a boost to the immune system. While research suggests the health benefits of golden milk, we aren't making any health claims. Instead, we suggest you try it out for yourself and see if this blend of milk and spices puts a smile on your face.
Can you drink golden milk every day?

I've been making and enjoying golden milk for the past year; ever since the last time you posted this recipe. I love it! I have even started using 1-2 tsps to flavor one of the smoothie recipes that I make occasionally -- yummy!

Ruth & Vicky,
Great recipe, even though I'd skip the cloves, not a favorite. There's a typo in the write-up: it should be AYURVEDIC and not Ayurvedik, the way you've spelled it.
Vicky and Ruth
Thank you Paula! We will correct the spelling thank you for letting us know.
