This modern hot toddy recipe will wake up your taste buds while relieving your winter blues! Warm turmeric ginger tea and spicy ginger liqueur garnished with a slice of caramelized orange, perfect on a cold winter night.
Our recipe for a thoroughly modern hot toddy brings together the healing power and antioxidants of turmeric-ginger tea (we like Trader Joe’s brand) with cinnamon sticks and a sweet and spicy shot of delicious Barrow's Intense ginger liqueur. ( This is not a sponsored post, we just received a bottle and we loved it!)
Many believe that the hot toddy came from Scotland where it was made with whiskey, tea or herbs, and sugar or honey. The traditional hot toddy was served warm and enjoyed before retiring to bed where the effects of the warm liquor would help people nod off to sleep.
Our recipe for also includes deliciously caramelized oranges, easily made with sugar and cinnamon. Try pairing your hot toddy with some of our favorite cookies, like our Orange Ginger Spice Cookies or Almond Thumprint Cookies.
Hot Toddies were popularized in the 18th century across the British Colonies where they were made with the fermented spirits popular in the region. In the Caribbean and the islands, they have been made with rum; and with whiskey, bourbon, or brandy in Scotland, Ireland, and other parts of northern and central Europe. Most recipes call for honey and lemon or other citrus juice.
We like to serve ours in a beautiful glass or ceramic mug rimmed with spiced sugar.
This is not a sponsored post. However, samples of Barrow's Intense Ginger Liqueur were provided.

Thank you for sharing this recipe. This is a very good way of taking ginger to treat colds. I did not have a turmeric ginger tea bag, so I added some freshly grated ginger and turmeric powder instead. The caramelised cinnamon orange slices are delicious in this drink. Will definitely be making again!
