This easy peanut sauce recipe is the best one you will ever try! Made with creamy peanut butter, tangy orange juice, and aromatic fresh ginger, this Thai peanut butter sauce is simply fantastic! Serve this vegan and gluten-free peanut sauce over noodles, veggies salads, or use it for dipping or as a salad dressing. The possibilities are endless with this flavorful sauce.
The Best Peanut Sauce Recipe
The first time we created this recipe, we made it as a sauce on a sweet potato noodle stir fry with tofu. While the dish was delicious, the sauce was easily our favorite part - we couldn't get enough! I discovered that this sauce has a nutty and sweet flavor that we can use in so many other ways.
When we say this is the best peanut sauce recipe you will ever make, we're not exaggerating. It is sweetened with both orange juice and maple syrup and has the underlying zing of fresh ginger. It's a vibrant sauce that doesn't need any added salt.
What's In Peanut Sauce
Here’s what we included and a bit of advice on each ingredient:
- Orange Juice: Use unsweetened orange juice, freshly squeezed or bottled (the kind without any added sugars). Oranges are sweet enough on their own. Using additional sugar will make the sauce taste far too sweet and detract from the overall flavor profile.
- Peanut Butter: Use all-natural peanut butter. That way, it won't have any processed oils or junky additives.
- Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice will give you the most flavor, we really dislike using jarred lemon juice, try it fresh we guarantee you will notice the difference!
- Ginger: Grate fresh ginger to get the most flavor out of it. Since you are pureeing the sauce, you want the ginger to be as fine and small as possible, or else you'll risk biting into ginger pieces.
- Tamari Sauce: Taramri is a gluten-free soy sauce. You can also use regular soy sacue or coconut liquid aminos as a vegan soy sauce replacement.
- Rice Vinegar: Even though there are many different flavors of rice vinegar, this recipe tastes best if you use the plain and basic variety. If you don't have rice vinegar handy, apple cider vinegar or whatever you have handy would work.
- Maple Syrup: This is optional. Only add maple syrup if you think the sauce isn't sweet enough for you, but we find it balances the flavors of this peanut sauce nicely.
Is This Peanut Sauce Vegan?
Yes, this recipe is vegan. It is also gluten-free since we used tamari sauce instead of soy sauce.
How To Make This Peanut Sauce Recipe
This recipe could not be any easier! All you do is add all of the ingredients to a blender. Then, blend it until it is smooth and combined.
Need more or less peanut sauce? Simply cut the recipe in half or double it, and blend away!
Sauce Tips
Here are a few tips that I wanted to share before we get to the recipe card.
This peanut butter sauce will thicken in the fridge, just add a little water or orange juice to thin it out
- Use creamy peanut butter. The crunchy peanut butter just doesn't puree the same.
- If you don't have lemons, you can use limes, instead.
- Store leftover peanut sauce in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Keep it in an airtight container - I like to use a mason jar with a tight lid because it doesn't leak.
- For a little extra flavor, add some minced garlic.
- Swap the peanut butter for any other type of all-natural, creamy nut butter. Some of our favorites are almond butter and cashew butter.
Serving Ideas
This is an Asian-inspired sauce, so keep that in mind when you are trying to find ways to use it. It makes a fantastic dip for vegetarian egg rolls. You can also use it as a sauce for Vegan Pad Thai or Green Papaya Salad. or as a dipping sauce for our summer rolls.
Add it on top of quinoa salad or roasted sweet potatoes. I use this sauce on top of sweet potato noodle stir fry with tofu and it is incredible.
You can also keep it simple and roast some tofu, place it on top of some rice, and then add this sauce on top!
