"Good things come in small packages". Couldn't agree more. And in our opinion, this is particularly true when it comes to desserts and sweet stuff.

As we learned at a very young age, when something is good, really good, a small portion is plenty to satisfy a sweet craving.

Take this hot rich drink ("Chocolate Caliente", as we call it in Spain) for instance, a very popular drink people enjoy all year long. It's  so rich and intense,  a little 4oz mug is really all you need. Not too sweet and packed with antioxidants. Doesn't get any  better than that.

Dedicated to all of you, fellow chocolate lovers :). See below for how to make hot chocolate.

Hope you enjoy it!

Description

In Barcelona, specially in the old city, you can enjoy a dreamy thick rich chocolate caliente. This hot chocolate, Barcelona style is absolutely fantastic. Add some hot fresh churros and you are in chocolate heaven.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 5 tbsp good quality pure unsweetened cocoa powder (we like mixing 2-3 different brands to add complexity to the flavor. Brnads we love are Navitas , Lake Champlain unsweetened cocoa powder), Scharffen Berger, Ghirardelli, and Guittard
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  • ½ tbsp corn starch
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Combine both cocoa powders, sugar and corn starch in a small bowl
  2. Pour COLD water into a small sauce pan, add vanilla extract (if using) cocoa mixture and start cooking at medium low heat, stirring constantly
  3. Cook until it thickens and serve immediately in two small mugs

A few years ago I visited Spain but never got around to trying the churros con chocolate, and I've never forgiven myself for it. I'm so excited I happened upon this recipe!

Nothing beats the authentic Spanish "churros con chocolate", but this one is pretty close! We hope you get to visit again and try it!

Just got back from 2 weeks in Spain where we fell in love with chocolate y churros. This recipe is like the best we had in Spain. We've shared with friends and family and they love it too. I'm from San Francisco so I use Ghiradelli and Guittard. Muy delicioso!

Hi Vicky & Ruth! Thank you for the recipe. My best friend just got back from Barcelona and she was gushing all over your hot chocolate. She also said that there was some special cookie served with it. Would you happen to know the name of that cookie, how to make it or where to buy. Thank you so much!

We always ate hot chocolate with churros, when we lived in Barcelona, that's the traditional way. So we don't know what cookie your friend ate. Can you be more specific about the cookie, flavor, shape, name so we know which one you are referring to. With more information we may be able to help you better. Give this chocolate a try it is our of this world good!

Hola! Lo más delicioso que probé en Europa, volví a Barcelona solo para sentarme a tomar chocolate con churros nuevamente. Entonces no lleva nada de leche? Gracias y saludos!

I remember we bought a powder mix in Barcelona
and they told us to make it with milk
so did we, and it tasted well

is it ok to make your recipe with milk too?

Yes you can use milk with this recipe. We just like the intense chocolate flavor and we didn't think it needed milk. Please let us know how it comes out if you try it.

This recipe is actually made with water, we asked the store how they made theirs and we made our own version with a variety of cocoa powders available in the US. I am sure you can try it with milk as well. Let us know if you do. Cheers!

It's funny that you call it Barcelona style when chocolate and churros are not typical from Catalunya.

Nosotras también crecimos en Barcelona, y cada vez que volvemos nos tomamos un chocolate con churros en la calle Petrixol y estábamos describiendo nuestra visita a Barcelona. Que origen tiene el chocolate con churros?

just finished making this, however here in nz we don't have cornstarch, so i used a product called arrowroot instead, didn't thicken quite as much as i'd expect but still tasted delicious!

I made a slight variation on this.
I used milk instead of water, and I added a small pinch of instant coffee. That's a trick I learned from my grandmother - use a small amount of coffee to emphasize the chocolate flavour. Don't worry - it won't make it taste like coffee; it will just make the chocolate more bold. Also be sure to sift the corn starch and the cocoa powder for fewer lumps, and if you want to be extra sure, pour through a metal mesh sieve before serving.

If you don’t have vanilla or cornstarch you can use about half a tablespoon custard powder as this contains.....vanilla and cornstarch ! also a tiny pinch of cinnamon if you like that

I have loved the Barcelona hot chocolate on several trips there. Can’t wait to make the recipe. Can it be scaled up to serve at a party? Say a crock pot? Thanks, in advance for the reply.

We are so glad you enjoyed Barcelona's Hot Chocolate! Yes, it can be scaled to serve at a party. We've never tried it in a crock pot, we've always made it in a pot on the stove. Let us know how it comes out in a crock pot. Please note that the recipe on the blog makes only 8 ounces of hot chocolate chocolate. We usually serve it in 2 ounce cups, since it's so rich. Enjoy!
