Hazelnut lovers, this one is for you! We're going to show you how to roast hazelnuts. It's easier than you think! Roasted hazelnuts are a great addition to salads, roasted vegetables, and desserts, and make a great healthy snack too!

If you are a fan of Swiss or Italian chocolates, or if you are lucky enough to live near a French crêperie, you are no doubt a fan of the rich, sweet, buttery tasting hazelnut.

Hazelnuts (also known as filberts) are popular in confections around the world because of their deliciously sweet taste. Roasted hazelnuts make a great addition to savory dishes, too; and their smooth flavor lends itself to many dishes that need an extra dose of crunch and nuttiness.

Roasting hazelnuts is easier than you think, and we're going to show you how to do it. This crunchy nutty snack is the perfect addition to salads, roasted vegetables and desserts.

Ingredients for Roasted Hazelnuts

  • Raw Hazelnuts. That's it! That's all you need.

Instructions for Roasted Hazelnuts in the Oven

  1. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and spread the hazelnuts in a single layer
  1. Roast for 10-15 minutes, watching closely, and wait until you smell a nutty aroma
  1. Remove from the oven and allow to cool completely

Can I Roast Hazelnuts on the Stove Top?

Roasting in the oven deepens the nutty flavor and crunch of the hazelnuts. You can use these in any recipe that calls for either roasted or toasted hazelnuts. When you toast hazelnuts on the stove top is a quicker cooking time and will brown the outside of the nuts rather than cooking them all the way through. Toasted hazelnuts still produce a nutty aroma and can be accomplished by cooking in a pan or skillet over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 5 minutes.

Tips to Make Irresistible Roasted Hazelnuts

  • Hazelnuts will go from raw to burnt in a moment's notice. So keep an eye on your oven!
  • Allow to cool completely on the baking sheet. The hazelnuts will benefit from a few extra minutes of the hot baking sheet as they cool.
  • You can leave the skins on if you don't mind them! We typically leave them on.
  • If you prefer to remove hazelnut skin, rub the hazelnuts one handful at a time in a clean tea towel or other clean kitchen towel. This can get messy, so keep them on the sheet tray for easier clean up.
  • The let the hazelnuts cool completely before using. Resist the temptation, trust us, its worth the wait! They will get crunchier as they cool.
  • Approximately 28 hazelnuts measure 1 ounce.

How to Store Roasted Hazelnuts

Place the completely cooled nuts in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 6 months or in a ziploc bag in the freezer for up to 1 year. They even taste great cold!

How to Use Roasted Hazelnuts

We love to roast hazelnuts for the extra crunch, nuttiness, and mellow flavor that roasting provides, and we often snack on the roasted nuts instead of popcorn or chips on family movie night. We also like to include them as a topping for yogurt, pancakes, ice cream, and even chocolate and vanilla cakes! Here are some ideas and recipes to use your roasted hazelnuts:

  • Chop and sprinkle on your favorite salad
  • Persimmon Fennel Salad
  • Fennel, Blood Orange Hazelnut Salad
  • Use in place of or in addition to pine nuts in pesto
  • Use as a topping on pasta or soup
  • High Protein Lemon Pasta
  • Chop or grind and sprinkle on yogurt or oatmeal along with honey
  • Charoset
  • Cover them in Chocolate
  • Chocolate Hummus
  • Chocolate Hazelnut Date Bars
  • Chocolate Hazelnut Mousse
  • Coffee Hazelnut Biscotti
  • Chocolate Tart with Roasted Hazelnuts

Description

Hazelnut lovers, this one is for you! We're going to show you how to roast hazelnuts. It's easier than you think! Roasted hazelnuts are a great addition to salads, roasted vegetables, and desserts, and make a great healthy snack too!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 pound raw hazelnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. We like lining  a large baking sheet with parchment paper, but hazelnuts can be roasted straight on the baking sheet
  2. Roast for 10-15 minutes. Check hazelnuts after 10 minutes, remove from the oven if they ate done or keep a close eye on them. They can easily burn.
  3. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow them to cool completely (the hazelnuts will continue cooking)
  4. We don't mind the hazelnut outer skins, but if you do, rub the cooled hazelnuts, one handful at a time, with a clean kitchen towel
  5. Store them in the freezer in medium-size glass jars with a tight lid or quart size freezer bags

Notes

  1. Roasted Hazelnuts go from done to ready in no time. Watch them carefully after 10 minutes in the oven
  2. You can toast hazelnuts in the oven on a dry skillet for about 5 minutes on medium-low heat, stirring constantly. Toasted hazelnuts are done when they become golden brown. Don’t let them become too dark or toasted or they will taste burnt.
  3. Keep toasted hazelnuts in a glass jar in the freezer to prevent them from getting rancid.

We are so sorry, we make them all the time and they come out perfect. Maybe your oven runs hot, try cooking them less time. Different ovens cook differently.

I roast all my nuts in my airfryer and they come out perfectly. My request to you is to put more recipes made in an airfryer on your website. So much better so much quicker than a conventional oven

As with other comments on this site, I find that 15 minutes at 350 degrees slightly overcooks the hazelnuts (this may be specific to my oven, but I have no way to test my theory). I suggest toasting them for 10-12 minutes at 350 degrees, or at 300 degrees for 15 minutes

Thank you for sharing your experience. Oven temperatures vary, and there may also be a difference between gas and electric ovens. 350F for 15 minutes, works in our oven, but hank you so much for sharing what works for you. We are sure it will be very helpful to readers.

Yes, you should roast the hazelnuts out of the shell. No worries, we are happy to answer any questions.
