Description

Tempeh Bacon is a plant-based substitution to the "real thing" that is surprisingly satisfying. This Tempeh Bacon is filled with the smoky flavor and satisfying crunch you crave. It’s delicious in salads or sandwiches and adds vegetarian protein to any meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8oz tempeh
  • 2 tbsp olive oil, avocado oil, or grapeseed oil
  • 1/4-1/2  tsp salt ( use smoked salt, if you have it)
  • 2 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp prepared chili powder
  • 1/4 tsp ground black pepper

Instructions

To make Tempeh Bacon Slices

  1. Starting from the shorter side of the tempeh block, slice the tempeh into 1/4" slices
  2. To prepare the "bacon", combine salt and spices in a small bowl. Sprinkle one side of the tempeh slices with half of the spice mixture.
  3. Heat 1 tbsp of the olive oil in a large 12" nonstick skillet. Arrange tempeh slices in one single layer, spice side down. Sprinkle the remaining spice mixture on the tempeh. Cook over medium-low heat for about 4 minutes, until golden brown.
  4. Drizzle the remaining tablespoon of olive oil on the tempeh, turn the slices over and continue cooking for 2-3 minutes or until the tempeh starts to turn golden (keep an eye so they don't burn).
  5. Remove from heat and transfer the tempeh slices to a plate lined with a paper towel, to absorb any excess oil. Set aside to cool slightly

To Make Tempeh Bacon Bits

  1. Starting from the shorter side of the tempeh block, slice the tempeh in 1/4" slices and then cut each slice into bite-size cubes
  2. In a large bowl add tempeh spices and 1 tablespoon of the oil. Stir well so the tempeh is well coated with the oil and the spices.
  3. Heat the remaining tablespoons of oil on a large nonstick pan add spiced tempeh and cook for 6-7 minutes stirring frequently until the tempeh turns a darker color.
  4. Remove from heat and transfer the tempeh slices to a plate lined with a paper towel, to absorb any excess oil. Set aside to cool slightly

Notes

  • Slice the tempeh 1/4" thick so it becomes crispy
  • Make sure it’s evenly coated with oil and spices
  • Let it cool for just a few minutes before serving. The tempeh firms up even more as it cools, giving it that satisfying crunch!
