Description

How to make cold brew coffee?

You've probably seen cold brew coffee pop up all over the place lately. But, what exactly is cold brew coffee? To put it simply, it's  coffee that is brewed in cold, not hot, water. The result is a smooth, less acidic coffee where its true flavor shines without being bitter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup coarse ground coffee of your choice
  • 4 cups room temperature bottled or filtered  water

Instructions

  1. In a large pitcher, combine coffee and water at a ratio of 1:4 and mix well. Depending on the size of your pitcher you may be able to fit 2 cups of coffee to 8 cups of water.  Cover and let it sit in the fridge or on your counter for 18-24 hours.  Do not let it sit on the counter for more than 24 hours, if you are not ready to strain it, simply refrigerate it.
  2. Strain into another pitcher using a funnel lined with paper towels or cheesecloth with a fine mesh strainer on top.  ( See post images).
  3. Place in the refrigerator and use within 2 weeks.

Notes

  • The coffee-to-water ratio really depends on how strong you like your coffee to be. We made ours using 1 cup of coffee to 4 cups of water, and it was just perfect for us. We tried it with decaf coffee as well, it was just as good!
  • We recommend using filtered water or bottled water instead of tap water for a better-tasting coffee.
  • Remember to ground your coffee coarse.
  • Freshly ground coffee is the way to go. Buy your coffee at a store that has a grinder or look for a local coffee roaster. If you have a coffee grinder at home you can use it as well. Have your beans coarse ground.
  • Freeze some of the coffee in ice cube trays and use this in your cold brew to keep it from watering down over time.
  •  Some people prefer to use a cold brew pitcher a French press or a coffee mason jar.  We decided to use a large pitcher, and strain the coffee grounds with a fine mesh strainer lined with paper towels or cheesecloth.
