Start the year right with this smoothie that will nourish your body with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
Raise your hand if you've decided to do some kind of juice cleanse or detox smoothie diet starting January.
Now raise your hand if you know what makes these concoctions you're about to drink "cleansing" or "detoxifying".
If you're scratching your head right now, don't feel bad about it. Most people have no idea either.
We're so quick to follow the latest diet trends, especially this time of year, that we often forget to stop and think about why we're doing what we're doing.
Let us help you out here and tell you what this drink brings to the table, so you can enjoy it and REALLY feel good about it:
- Orange juice: vitamin C powerhouse, which is an antioxidant and supports the immune system
- Coconut water: high in potassium and super hydrating
- Spinach: high in vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants
- Cucumbers: hydrating, cooling, high in fiber, vitamin K and potassium and supports brain function, helps with inflammation, skin aging and bad breath. Like a veggie super hero!
- Romaine lettuce: high in B vitamins, vitamin K, minerals and beta carotene and calcium. Surprisingly, also high in protein!
- Bananas: high in potassium and fiber and naturally sweet.
- Cranberries: super high in antioxidants, immune booster and help lower the risk of urinary tract infections.
- Beet powder: high in antioxidants, fiber, calcium, iron, potassium and folate. Naturally rich in nitric oxide that can improve blood flow and lower blood pressure.
As you can see, nature is almost like a medicine cabinet. So before you spend a week having nothing but juices and maple syrup and cayenne drinks, think about it. You can enjoy the exact same benefits by eating fruits and veggies every single day. Sounds like a better, easier to stick to resolution, don't you think?
Happy New Year!

this looks great. A lot of detox smoothies can taste bad especially with beets so I am interested to try this with OJ and coconut water together.

What kind of blender do you reccomend using for these smoothies? I can NEVER recreate the frothy/creamy texture that I get at SmoothieKing or Robeks - it's always chunky or watery.
Vicky & Ruth says
We recommend a high power blender ( such as Vitamix and Blendtec) to make these smoothies. Especially if you're using ice or frozen fruit. They will help get that frothy consistency. Hope this helps!
