Ingredients for Date Balls
- Goji Berries.
- Orange Juice to soften the berries
- Hot Water.
- Dried Sour Cherries.
- Pitted Medjool Dates. These provide natural sweetness.
- Coconut Oil. at room temperature
- Unsweetened Almond Milk.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder.
- Salt.
- Raw Hemp Seeds.
- Chia Seeds.
- Raw Cocoa Nibs.
- Chopped Walnuts or Pecans
- Cashew or Almond Flour. Most energy balls use peanuts and peanut butter, you can go ahead and replace the nut flour with peanut butter if you wish.
Ingredients for the Chocolate Coating
- Dark Chocolate Chunks. You can use any chocolate you like.
- Coconut Oil. Room temperature.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder.
How to make Date Balls
- The first thing you need to do to make these energy bites is rehydrate the Goji berries. Soak them for five minutes or so in the orange juice and hot water. Discard the liquid once the berries are rehydrated.
- Next, you will pulse ingredients in the food processor, check the recipe card below for details. Once everything has been processed, move it to a large mixing bowl and add the remaining ingredients by hand. Refrigerate the batter for at least fifteen minutes. If you do not have a food processor, you will need to finely chop or grate everything by hand.
- While the mixture is chilling, prepare the chocolate for drizzling. Scoop two tablespoons at a time into a ball like you would cookie dough, and then dip in cocoa powder and drizzle with the melted chocolate. Our basic energy ball recipe is one of the easiest and healthiest sweet treats you can make.
Tips to Make Tasty Energy Balls
- If you don't have fifteen minutes to wait while the mixture refrigerates, pop the bowl in the freezer for five minutes instead.
- Use a cookie scoop to make sure that all of your date balls are equally sized.
- Once you form the truffles, place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet in the fridge while you prepare the chocolate for drizzle.
- Using a high-quality cocoa powder improves the overall flavor of the recipe.
Storage Tips
- Once the chocolate drizzle has hardened, refrigerate your date balls in an airtight container until you serve them.
- Freeze leftover energy balls in an airtight container for up to three months and thaw them directly in your lunch box or at room temperature.
- You can start by freezing them spread out on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and then move them to a freezer-quality bag once they are mostly frozen.
Variations for Energy Bites
- One of the fun things about these protein-rich treats is that you can come up with endless variations that still taste amazing.
- Try different mixing in your favorite nut butter like peanut butter, almond butter, or sunflower seed butter.
- Use ground flaxseeds to add omega-3 fatty acids.
- Add spices like red pepper flakes to bring some heat, cinnamon, nutmeg, cardamom, and even some espresso powder.
- Use agave nectar, honey, or maple syrup for extra sweetness.
- Have some fun and crush your homemade granola bars to coat the exterior.

- Up the protein content by adding your favorite protein powder.
- Add a teaspoon of vanilla extract.

Ingredients
FOR THE DATE BALLS
- ½ cup Goji Berries, if you can't find them replace them with dried cranberries
- 4 tbsp orange juice
- 4 tbsp hot water
- ½ cup dried sour cherries
- 5 large Medjool dates, pitted or 10 smaller dates, pitted
- 2 tbsp coconut oil, at room temperature
- 2 tbsp unsweetened almond milk
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- 2 tbsp raw hemp seeds
- 1 tbsp chia seeds
- 2 tbsp raw cocoa nibs
- ¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
- ¾ cup almond flour, cashew flour or any other nut flour
- CHOCOLATE DRIZZLE AND COATING
- ¼ cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 tsp coconut oil
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
Instructions
- Soak goji berries in orange juice and water until softened, about 5 minutes. Drain and discard the liquid. If you are using dried cranberries, you don't need to soak them.
- Combine the soaked goji berries, cherries, dates, coconut oil, and almond milk in a food processor. Pulse a few times to form a rough paste.
- Add unsweetened cocoa powder and salt and pulse again until well combined. Transfer to a bowl.
- Add hemp seeds, chia, cocoa nibs, walnuts, and almond flour. Mix well using a spatula or your hands. Refrigerate for 15 minutes.
- Working with approximately 1 tablespoon at a time, form the truffles and place them in the freezer while you prepare the drizzle. It helps to use an ice cream scoop to form the balls.
- To make the drizzle, combine chocolate chips and coconut oil in a bowl, and melt in the microwave at 20-second increments, stirring after each 20 seconds.
- Roll the truffles in unsweetened cocoa powder and drizzle with melted chocolate
Notes
- If you want to serve them as a boozy dessert you can replace the orange juice with Whiskey or Dark Rum.
- If the dates you are using seem a little dry, soak them in orange juice like the goji berries

I need to know more though before I make any recommendations for your specific hair care needs. It is frizzing, bushy and dry? What is your hair type-fine or course, thin or thick quantity, length presently, do you have any processes on your hair currently such as a perm, color, or hi lighting? A pic would also be helpful. From your description of your hair, it sounds like you might benefit from a Chi Enviro treatment! I have very curly hair that has its own agenda too! I can tame it on low humidity days, but on humid days it looks like I have a Brillo pad sitting on top of my head!!! I had my first Chi Enviro treatment about 2 years ago and it was life-changing!! It is like Keratin, but this is chemical-free and it smoothes the hair shafts so that humidity doesn't affect it in the same way as before the treatment. My hair still curls in humidity, but it's a softer and smoother curl, rather than that Brillo pad look! You might want to do an internet search to find a beauty shop in your area that does the Chi Enviro treatments.
Thanks for so many wonderful recipes!! Our absolute favorite was the Cold Rice & Tofu Salad with the Three Mustard Dressing! I made it several times during the warm weather and served it to my husband and grown children. Everyone loved it! We have recently stopped eating corn and peas so when it gets warm again, I will just add other vegetables - like green beans and carrots.
